Polylactic acid (PLA)

Polylactic acid (PLA) is an easy-to-process, biocompatible, biodegradable plastic. As such, it is used for medical implants like stents and implantable drug dispensers that are designed to biodegrade over time. PLA is used in food packaging and disposable cutlery and can .

CAS Num 26100-51-6

Polylactic acid, also known as PLA, is a thermoplastic monomer derived from renewable, organic sources such as corn starch or sugar cane. Using biomass resources makes PLA production different from most plastics, which are produced using fossil fuels through the distillation and polymerization of petroleum.

Polylactic acid, also known as poly or polylactide, is a thermoplastic polyester with backbone formula ₙ or [–CHCO–] ₙ, formally obtained by condensation of lactic acid CHCOOH with loss of water. It can also be prepared by ring-opening polymerization of lactide [–CHCO–] ₂, the cyclic dimer of the basic repeating unit.
Density: 1210–1430 kg/m3
Melting point: 150 to 160 °C (302 to 320 °F; 423 to 433 K)
Formula: (C3H4O2)n
NFPA 704 (fire diamond): 0 1 0
Solubility in water: 0 mg/ml
NOTE
Polyester is a synthetic or man-made fiber material. Shortened from its technical name, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which, if born, would be its legal name, is made by mixing ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. Made in a lab from chemical compounds, polyester is a kind of plastic.
NOTE
Monomers are atoms or small molecules that bond together to form more complex structures such as polymers. There are four main types of monomer, including sugars, amino acids, fatty acids, and nucleotides.
